There is no way for us to know. But yes it's possible he has feelings. And it's possible he doesn't realize it. It's also possible he does realize it and is just trying to be a good room mate and keep the peace. So he might lie for that reason. Crushing on a room mate can turn the whole household sour. Things can go bad real quick. Even if the feeling is returned, it can cause problems.
