She felt things weren’t moving forward so ended things with you. Lots of back and forth and him saying he’d at least like to be friends.

Well here's my problem. I can give you MY answer. But that doesn't mean it's THIS guy's answer.
No. I would not say that in this case. I haven't dated you. We're not going to date.🤣 (because i don't date a woman twice. If we broke up we STAY broken up). so I have absolutely no reason to say this.
I would only say it for 2 reasons
1. I want to get back together with you and want you to know the door will remain open for you (but as I said I don't do that... this guy MIGHT).
2. I would do it because I'm rope-a-doping you. I think you still have some feelings for me on some level and you might change your mind. I keep you thinking I still love you so if you change your mind and you decide to get back together with me I can wait till you get comfortable and when you're not suspecting it dump you as brutally as I can.
You probably don't like this response... but do you want to hear something nice? Or something honest?

I don't know if you guys were "friends" before dating. Most people can't be friends date then go back to being friends. So knowing this I don't know if he's futile hanging on to hope. Or if he's willing to play the long con for retribution.
You know him you'd be able to answer this better than I would.
