Maybe special occasions like Christmas/Birthday/Anniversaries if she likes it? My wife doesn't like wearing jewelry so I never bought her any besides her engagement and wedding ring.

The wedding ring is the only jewelry she ever wears besides occasionally a string necklace that her niece made for her, and only when she sees the niece (she doesn't actually like to wear it).

I did originally but she really doesn't like it. I bought her a couple of rings early into dating and she wore them for a little while and then quit, and I realized she only wore it to make me happy (she later told me very gently that she's really not into jewelry).

Her favorite is wine and cookies. That's my go-to gift for special occasions. Also iPad. She loves her iPad so when there's a new model out, I get that for her.

Also doesn't really care for flowers. She's not such a typical girlie-girl. Was initially difficult figuring out what gifts to get her. But actually she's very simple: cookies and wine always makes her happy. She also loves traveling to new countries so that's an easy way to make her happy is to go traveling on a vacation somewhere.

Is jewelry common in Japan? I would assume not because there are probably few mines there and it would be more expensive to import it.

I think it depends on the style. Like Ginza girls definitely love jewelry as well as designer brand clothing. Shibuya girls can be quite wild in their style and can include some jewelry but usually inexpensive, like silver. Depends a lot on the fashion style. Each district in Tokyo tends to have a unique style.

A more natural-ish look is becoming very popular though with minimal jewelry and only very natural style make-up, little or no dying of hair, like this for a very pretty example:

Japan is also more conservative too. Silver would make sense because China is right next door (even though foreign relations might not be that great).

That might be a big part of why silver tends to be popular here for the economical reasons. I think also there's a kind of overarching style popular in young Japanese that is kind of grungy, maybe sometimes sort of emo/Goth, or a lot of it looks to me almost like 80s glam-rock: very colorful hair, grungy clothes, leather, silver. I'm out of touch now being in my 40s but it looks like something from the 80s to me.

How much is that from American influence?

I think a lot of it is likely from American and European influence, but Japan tends to lag behind. So like a fashion style that might be popular 20+ years ago in the US and Europe might still be popular in Japan. Music is similar. I haven't been to night-clubs in several years but the last time I went to one, they were still playing Shakira.
