How do I found out if she has a boyfriend without directly asking?

I’ve been talking to a girl for a while and would like to ask her on a date but last we met up in person she mentioned her boyfriend offhand. This was a year ago though and I’m not sure if they are still together. I wouldn’t want to ask her on a date if she’s still seeing someone but I get the impression they might not be together anymore. How do I get information about if she’s single now without making it a direct and overly blunt question?

I know a guy that sent a mutual female friend to ask on his behalf so if she said she had a boyfriend she would not hate the guy that wanted to ask her out because she would not know who he was.
