What's your opinion on girl making the first step? would you like it?

i recently met a guy, and we had a small talk. I find him cute, so i thought maybe i should just make the first step and text him and ask him something about school... I don't know if he has a girlfriend, but on the social media he doesn't really has a lot of girls as friends and only pictures of himself
