Girls, Told a girl we couldn't be friends, and she is insisting on meeting up?

So I texted a girl from my history course asking if she'd be up for a date (we've been talking daily for almost a year), and we've gotten close.

I sent her a text asking if she'd want to have a dinner together as a date night, and if not, that I could not be friends with her. She responded with asking to have a phone call, and then asking to meet up in person that night. At no point did she say yes or no, but instead asked to meet up in 30ish minutes.

I took this to be a long-winded rejection, so I let her know that text is less embarrassing, and that there wasn't really a need to draw this out as I wouldn't be offended at all with it being a "no". Should I have met up with her? I know it's more "formal", but I don't understand why she couldn't just say no over text.
