Guys, Is the saying 'jokes are half meant' true?

A guy I'm flirting with makes a lot of jokes and sometimes it's hard to know really what he meant. He joked I didn't like him when it's obvious I do. Today he joked and said 'you'd get an American citizenship for me?🥺'

I didn't even know how to respond 😭

I know these are just playful things but do you think it is true that many a true word is said in jest?

That's pretty true, honestly. A lot of comments like the ones he was making are just ridiculous comments that someone makes while flirting, but it's really common for people to make "jokes" about things that are actually feeler statements to get a reaction from the other person.

For an example of a feeler statement, think of the gorgeous woman who makes "jokes" about how ugly she is on the pictures she posts on social media. Or how you knew that one guy in high school that was always making tasteless racist jokes that always seemed to work their way into conversations that didn't really have anything to do with race.

Yeah I agree. Although he was being ridiculous I kind of got the feeling he was gauging my reaction regardless

Absolutely not. But some are 99% true. Like, if I joked about banging a dude, it's 0% true, but if I joked with my wife about banging a beautiful woman, it's half true. Obviously I'm programmed to want that, but I would also never do it, so there's only half truth in it. When she jokes about banging a celebrity, I know she would 100% do it if I'd let her.

Yeah that's true. Some are just pure jokes and generally aren't meant to be taken seriously. But it seems when guys flirt there's a hidden meaning disguised behind the joke

That’s Sigmund Freud, if I remember correctly. The way and subjects a person jokes about tell a lot about his/her character.
