How are people stupid enough to fall for these Internet romance scams?

if some person is telling you some elaborate story and they need you to send them some huge amount of money, it is for sure a scam. How dumb can people be?

Yeah, I know. I would've thought by now people figured it out. Scammers have been doing this as early as 2010, or at least that's when they would try to hit me up. You figure them out quick because they always keep calling you "dear" or "sweetie" and stuff. Oversaturating you with love.
