It totally depends on the girl. If she's more upfront and open about things, being straight to the point and direct usually works better. She sees you being the first one to make the move as a sign of confidence and boldness, and may be more likely to say yes.

On the flipside, if she's more reserved and seems like an introvert, being direct has a higher outcome of spooking her and scaring her off. These kinda girls like things nice and easy, so better to get to know them first, find some common ground, throw them subtle hints that you're interested in them, and then if the coast seems clear, pop the question and see where things go. Worst case scenario, she'll let you off nicely without you looking like a desperate fool
