Asked my coworker what his plans for the weekend is and he said “i don’t know i don’t have nothing planned as of right now “

Just suggest plans and see what he says. Ask him if he wants do so something on a time you’re free. Even if he’s busy or it’s just not something he’s interested in doing.

If he wants to hang out he will try to find time as well as find something you both would enjoy. Otherwise the ball is in his court. If he says no let it be.

If before asking him this question, you had never shown any interest beyond him being just a co-worker, then he won't pick up on what you were asking. However, many guys will avoid mixing work with their personal life so bear that in mind too. Although I am single, I have no plans of changing this.
