Recently went on first date, it went well. He messaged me afterwards saying he had fun and that it was nice meeting me. We texted fairly consistently for a few days after and then it all just stopped. Did the idea of a potential relationship freak him out? I consider him a lost cause at this point

Just ask him. Did you message him and he just wouldn’t respond? Or was he doing all the initiating and realized he really wasn’t getting a lot of effort back? It really depends.

Also sometimes it’s a slow process where people just slowly fade away and talk less…. And less… and less.

There could be a thousand reasons for this. Maybe he just wanted to get to know you without having any special intentions and now thinks that you might have a crush on him. He then broke off contact to save you from even greater disappointment. Or he met someone else. Or something else. Don't think about it any more, just put the matter behind you.

No. He probably just met someone else who distracted him from his interest in you. Guys tend to be that way.
