Dating down in regards to what? Looks, status?

Looks are subjective. I see lots of celebrity's and model's faces that are supposed to be gorgeous and am not that impressed, especially when they are not wearing makeup.
I see lots of absolutely adorable women who some guys rate as average.
And preferences for certain shaped bodies is even more subjective.

Status is a red flag for me. Does high status mean that she is a haughty, status-seeking princess who is into consumerism?

Who knows what a guy sees in a particular woman. Maybe he absolutely loves her personality, charm, wit, and values.
Maybe she is a sexual rock star.

I don't know who gets to judge another person's choices.

They don't. It's not dating down if it's who he wants to be with. You're looking at it through outside eyes. It only matters what the guy sees. He's not going to date down. I don't know if that's a picture of you and your guy... but the two people in the picture are about equal in looks. Nobody is dating down (based on looks) in that picture. Is it possible you're just being silly?

Men can be attracted to a woman in ways beyond just how they physically look.

Also, just because most people might think the lady is less attractive than him does not mean that he sees it that way.

Then there's always a group of men who feel like they just can't do any better.

And then there's the guys who don't realize that feeling bad for a girl is not the same thing as liking a girl, and subconsciously just date the girl out of pity.

Most men date down. Men often bring much more positive things to a relationship, plus most women are not as attractive as they pretend to think they are, that is why they wear makeup because they know they are often average at best, and plenty are unattractive.
