I personally walked away form a LOT of things that my parents were willing to give me free of charge

Depends on the reasons. I lived with my parents for a long time when I had a job that had me on the road over half the year - why pay rent for my stuff? And I wasn't giving up much freedom as I was living elsewhere most of the time.
