There are many questions on GAG asking "Why does he?" "Why does she?"" "How can I get my partner to do / stop doing?" I think in general this questions are not useful. We can't change other's behavior. We can tell them how we feel, and ask them to change, but if they continue, then we have to choose whether to continue the relationship or not.

I don't have specific advice for you because I don't know the culture you are living in. In some circles it is common for older men to make suggestive comments to young women, in others it is generally unacceptable. If you have supportive parents you might ask them. I don't know what you mean by being hit on. I tend to put the internet in one category and real life in another category. Sometimes the two intersect, and sometimes they don't. In my own life 99 percent of the people I meet online, stay just online. If they cross the line with me, I MIGHT just block them. If I get to talking with them, then I might try talking it through. If they don't listen to reason, then I block them.

Age and gender is kinda hard to tell online, because you got to take the person's word for it. I'm told that we got people on this site that are boys when they are really girls, and girls who say they are boys. Some people here even lie about their age.

I'm NOT saying it's right for an older guy to hit on a younger girl online. I'm just trying to make the point that things get gray on the internet. For example, a man and woman could meet on this site, and decide to date in real life. Yet that doesn't normally happen because this is not a dating site! You can even find people on here that say that. "This is not a dating site". Another problem is we got people from different countries. For example, where I live 18 is of age. But in some places in the world, 16 is. I think you can even find places where the age is even lower than that!

My advice is if older man hits on you, you should first try reporting them. Then you should block them. Do it quickly before things get out of hand.

They might just be trying to brighten your day with a compliments and common curtsy possibly because you seem awkward and/or seem to have low self-esteem and you are just taking it the wrong way... Older people often have children, sometime they have daughters... So they deal with teenagers being teenagers on a daily basis. When people enter middle age they often have a concern for establishing and guiding the next generation. So when they see kids struggling, they try to help them out or cheer them up. That stage of development is called generativity. That said, you didn't really give enough context. They might just be perverts. More often than not though, they are just being nice.

@Flower7 You sound like you have very bad intuition. It's extremely common for middle age people to compliment and encourage young people. It's pretty much a job requirement for people that work with youth. Like for example teachers are suppose to be positive to their students and try to get to know them so they can customize education content that will resonate with the kid. Teens could easy see compliments and someone taking interest in them as hitting on them (probably why teens often have crushes on teachers), when in reality the teacher is just trying to help the kid succeed and be positive. If you don't do that sort of stuff as a teacher, you'll probably get fired. It's an entirely different thing if they are making lewd comments about your body and trying to ask you out for drinks this weekend. Like I said, not enough context.

Say a male teacher makes eye contact with you, smiles, and say good morning young lady you did great on your last test. Good job! You're so smart! You look nice this morning. Maybe he tosses out a teasing joke to get you to laugh and asks you how was your weekend? Then he actively listens to what you say in return and acts kind in return… Maybe he expresses some concern for you because you were doing something dangerous like drinking too much and. He’s probably hit 15 of the top 20 things women look for to determine if a guy is attracted to them. Yet he’s just trying to get his student to continue working hard in his class and encourage good behavior, while trying to glean information about personal likes and dislikes that can be integrated into teaching examples/analogies that the student will understand easily and that’s just in the first minute or two of a student entering a classroom. It happens every day.

OMG is Mr. Teacher hitting on me? He initiates contact, he makes eye contact, he smiles at me, he has positive body language, he compliments me, he teased me, he's so protective of me and shows genuine concern, he laughs with me, he actively listens to me, he's so sweet and thoughtful, he takes interest in my life, he remembers details about me, he uses playful banter, we have consistent communication every time I'm in his class... The same sort of things teachers do which gets misinterpreted as interest is also common behavior for pediatricians, nurses, school counselors, dental hygienists, psychologists, police officers that do community outreach, tutors, sports coaches, religious leaders, summer camp counselors, etc. So pretty much most of the adults kids come in contact with. So kids are bound to make a mistake and misinterpret someone at some point as they are growing up.

Additionally like I said, when you see a kid that just looks awkward, it's common to be nice just to cheer them up. For example I remember one of my neighbors that lived on my block had two daughters. When they would stand at the end of the street to wait for the school bus they looked so nervous every morning. You could see the anxiety dripping off of them. It was general teenage angst. They probably were worried about being judged for what they were wearing that day or being bullied when they got on the school bus or maybe there was trouble at home. So I use to smile and wave to them as I passed and say good morning as I left for work and they use to light up in smiles and then all the sudden the anxiety would break and they would look happy. I didn't want anything from them other than for them to stop being sad saps. But it might have made a small difference in their outlook for their day.
