So this idea that men only befriend women they like is false..:)

Not me. I categorize and compartmentalize women I run into pretty quickly. 1% are ever gonna be that mind/body/spirit connection I'm looking for. The rest? Friends. never gonna be anything more.

And I have friend tiers for women.

• Casual friends I run into from time to time. Perfectly nice women. Great to talk to for a few minutes. But that's about it.
• Women who actually have my phone number and may contact me / invite me to a group event but zero deep conversations.
• Women who have my contact info and could actually ask for my help or advice. I guess sort of real friends. Deep conversations can happen. But 100% of the time they are coming to me with their problems. I limit my availability because of that.

I don’t really ever need their help. I’m pretty self sufficient and my life is squared away. And there’s generally not much they are in a position to help me with.

Also, I make a conscious effort to NOT burden other people unnecessarily or too frequently. It sort of a code of ethics, being a good friend, not being needy.

To your update, yes and no. It's probably just not as prevalent as women like to think. Because there are some women that that's all they do is try to game men. I knew a woman that for the better part of 10 years. I thought we were friends. Turns out she was trying to game me the majority of the time. But I was oblivious to it. These type of women by their nature probably think all men are just dying to get in their knickers. When the reality is these women don't play by any rules. Most good and decent women will give you some kind of sign she doesn't want to be just your friend. But she has enough self respect to not just dangle herself out there. See the distinction?

I have a few female friends and in each case there are people with whom I do not want to have anything more happening. I don't think they want to either. But they are good friends.
