I honestly can't think of anything "petty" that I've broken up with an ex for. I've only technically broken up with 2 girls. One was bipolar and it was too much for me to deal with. The other was not communicative enough with me and I told her many times I want more communication from her. She never changed.

But there are many reasons to break up. If there's a conflict in views, not many shared interests, different senses of humor, goals don't align, lack of sexual compatibility (they aren't willing to fulfill your sexual desires and vice-versa), they put no effort into their physical appearance or fitness level, etc.

Petty would be considered something like breaking up with someone because they prefer to leave the light on when they sleep or because it disgusts you that they eat hotdogs with nothing on them.

I would honestly break up with a girl if they refused to incorporate salads in their diet. I haven't as of yet, but I would.

Sometimes it’s the smallest details that reveal incompatibility.

Maybe it was a silly habit, an off comment, or a vibe that didn’t sit right things that seem trivial but hint at bigger misalignments in values, energy, or character.

Refusing to date over “petty” reasons isn’t really petty, it’s honoring your standards and noticing subtle red flags before investing time or emotions.

I don't know whether you'd consider it petty, but I just didn't want to date anyone more than couple of years younger than me. This guy was great and was also my close friend. He expressed his interest in me, but I didn't feel the same because of the age gap.

Also... I didn't say yes to a guy few years ago because he was way taller than me. I was feeling kinda intimidated when he asked me out. It would hurt my neck to look at him when we were standing. I want to kiss my partner's face easily without putting strain on my neck. So, I couldn't imagine dating him.

I didn't like some physical feature about them, like their hair or their hairstyle, or their weight, or their septal nose ring, I didn’t like certain physical features about them, such as their hair, hairstyle, weight, septum nose ring, or other aspects. I found some of these traits so off-putting that I could hardly look at them. Admittedly, I've chosen not to date people for those reasons, and I recognize that it’s quite petty. r something else like that. I found it just so gross I couldn't even look at it. So yeah, I've refused to date people for that reason, which is really petty, I will admit that. I'm not proud of it, but at least I'm being honest about it.

Oh yeah, the other sort of group of reasons that I've refused to date someone has to do with what I perceived very quickly to be a diagnosable psychiatric condition that was just a rule-out. Things like schizoaffective disorder or just up and up schizophrenia or bipolar disorder or just a whole variety of personality disorders that you've probably heard of, including borderline and antisocial.

I see a lot of this in my work, and I'm actually trained very highly as a diagnostician, so when I see this in a social context, it's really obvious and very disturbing. My choice is not to date them because I don't date people who are patients, and it's either one or the other - but it's not going to be both. If you're a patient, then I take care of you professionally, and if you're not a patient, I don't socialize with you, and I don't date you because it's not proper for me to do those things - It's not good for you, and it's not good for me.

The most that I've ever done in that regard is to refer some people to some of my colleagues so they could get some help, and I am willing to do it because I feel like it's ethical and ok to do it. And it's a decent and kind thing to do for them. That's it, really.

i don’t think either turnoffs like tattoos or piercings or mental disorders / patient caregiver dynamic are petty reasons not to date someone.

the question was meant to be more lighthearted like she eats her peas one pea at a time lol

Probably voice. A high pitched nasal voice that some women have is tough for me to listen to. It can sound really childlike or just be really grating.

I recommended an Italian restaurant for our first date. She said it was too far away from her and if I would consider one closer to her. I had no problem with that so I said "sure, what do you have in mind?" She said a restaurant I had never been to; a family owned restaurant in a part of town I rarely get to. So of course I asked how it was. She then took great offense to me questioning the quality of the restaurant because I often eat frozen food out of convenience. All she had to say was it was a good restaurant and I would have met her there all dressed up and ready to mingle. I try asking again about the restaurant now using other Italian restaurants as comparison and she goes on about how she would never eat at any of "those" restaurants. Like I am some sort of pauper because I have eaten at an Olive Garden. This goes on for about a day or two; me trying to get a sense of the restaurant and her belittling me for my food choices. So I gave up. I mean if you want to be a picky eater, I don't have a problem with that; it is when you impose your pickiness on others is the domain of food snobbery.
