I’m a woman and I like a man. We’re friends and both in our thirties and I’m autistic, so I have a hard time picking up on social cues. We’ve known each other for a year and he’s frequently gone back and forth between telling me he’s romantically interested and insisting that he loves me platonically. Recently he’s stepped back from letting me treat him like a brother figure and texts less and shows up more in person and gazes at me a lot. Once he leaned forward, stared and smiled.

My feeling is that his platonic love for you have moved to a deeper liking that could no longer be considered platonic and that he is perhaps more inclined to seeing you in person rather than simply texting you.

That would be my explanation as to how his behavior has changed. You are not telling us whether this gentleman is also in the autistic spectrum or if you are the only one.

Simply be careful that you don't let yourself into something that you may have a hard time getting away from if you don't reciprocate his feelings. Good luck.

Yes, we’re both mildly autistic and I reciprocate his feelings. I told him he’s going to have to openly admit he’s interested, if he really is.

I do hope for you that your story takes a happy ending. Just be careful not to go too fast and that you take it slow. It is obviously important that he also admits he has feelings for you and not that you just simply rely on a gut feeling.

After brunch, where he flirted with me a bit, he also admitted to being interested, but being afraid if we dated of losing his independence. I told him that we should both stay independent and have our own lives and friends regardless.

That is by far the best way to start your relationship. You don't want to abandon everything and everyone. Take your time, move progressively and see how things develop.
