What would you change about dating apps?

While I'm no longer using dating apps, as I find finding someone in person is ideal, I know a lot of people still use them so I came up with this idea to make it easier for folks who still want to use them-

I would make it so once you match, you have to video each other so you won't be getting a catfish and it would also make you have to open up to the person right away vs messaging the person where you don't really get the real them through messages like you would with video.

I would also make it so that you are matching with someone within your area. No further than 30 miles away unless you live in a small town. Then it can open up to the next city near you.

I think having this would eliminate a lot of awkwardness that you may find in dating apps and keep people from making excuses to not meet each other. 30 miles is no excuse not to meet up anytime soon.

Dating apps aren't designed for success for anyone but the site owners. All current dating apps are a scam.

If I was designing a real dating site designed to actually put couples into real relationships, here's how it would work:

You would pay a substantial up-front fee, maybe $500. That gets you an account. You then log in and fill out an online form. It will have a section about what you have to offer, about what you are looking for in a partner, about your past, and a free form section where you could write whatever you want someone to know about you.

Then, you schedule an appointment to go to an office for a photo shoot and stats collection. You will be measured, weighed, and have a standardized set of pictures taken, which are good for 1 year. In addition, you will be able to upload up to 3 additional photos of your choice.

You will be offered profiles that match your criteria that are within 30 miles of where you live, unless that circle includes less than 150,000 people, in which case the radius will expand until it does.

You will be offered text-only profiles initially, so you will actually have to read the profiles. You will not get the statistical info (height, weight, etc.) until you have matched and been communicating for 2 weeks, and no photos until after 4 weeks. This will encourage more honestly in the profiles (so as not to waste so much investment because you have misled people) and will heavily discourage those just looking for hookups.

You must refresh your photos and measurements every year, and well as your fee. This again will discourage casual users and hookups.

Finally, first dates must be split - you each pay your own way. After the first date, those arrangements are up to you, but for the first date, no one is owed anything nor can they take advantage of the other person. This will clarify expectations and virtually eliminate foodie dates.

This would be a dating app built for success. It significantly removes the ability to manipulate and lie, because you would literally be wasting your own time and money. By having a financial stake that you can see and understand, you will be more motivated to participate and succeed. And it's designed NOT to reward shallow behavior and unrealistic standards because there is no instant gratification. You have to make a real effort to get anywhere.

I believe these options already exist. I’m engaged so no dating apps for me, but back in 2019 when I gave it a whirl, the option to only find matches within a certain radius was available. I specifically only wanted to consider men in-range because I wasn’t driving at the time, so I would adjust the range to as low as 10-15 miles but it did narrow down my options.

As for the video chatting part, I’ve recently heard of two apps geared towards this, thanks to my cousin. She tried Ditto which is like a live speed dating app, so video camera is mandatory, but she didn’t like it. She also is trying IRLY which she doesn’t mind but it isn’t the best pool of men. That’s it so far though!

I wouldn't change much. After my divorce, I met several nice women on dating sites, including my current wife.

If anything, I would make it a requirement to identify the year of each picture when posting it, subject to banning from the site if that is done fraudulently.

I'll agree with you on that thing you said... why would a dating app "match you" with someone that's in a different state, city or even zip code... lmao

maybe, I would also change the NAME OF IT... to a

MEETING APP, in which people sign-up and commit to MEET, and so that is also safer and more optimized, I would also provide meeting places, dedicated locations to it... with a café, restaurant, inside park, library or whatever else people prefer these days

I like what you wrote, so I would add that and also make it centered for the average person. That way there’s no pressure or emphasis on someone else getting the better picks and all of that. Also, I would make it a little strict by not allowing married people or people in relationships to interact with single people. (That would make it tricky to create) But ultimately, I would just want to create a safe environment and as drama less as possible. Video chatting is definitely something that I feel could avoid a lot of the bs.. I would also add tips and things to look out for.

I would do the exact opposite of what dating apps are doing, I would restrict the amount of profiles we have access to. The idea would be to make things organic, to inject value that has been lost.

Now you can only look at a couple of profiles per day.

On tinder they gave free super likes every day. And guess what, 1 in 3 of the times I used it I got a match with a super baddie.

OK I'll play social media billionaire. The problem is that 4's see 10's and 4's think they have a chance of getting a 10 instead of a fellow 4.

So I think some AI to keep people in their lane. 4's get to see 3's and 5's. 8's & 9's and 10's only get to see each other.

Your solution does address the false sense of abundance so I think yours and mine will sort out the problems that dating apps have cause.

I think those exist already...

Radius filter is a basic feature all of them offer and many have option for video chat. It's not mandatory but nothing stops you from making it a mandatory thing for yourself.

I think you can't fix the biggest issue dating apps have... People lying about their intentions. As soon as you look for something serious only, your chances of success go down rapidly.

If you meet someone and then create a new account for whatever reason, you can’t search for that user and “block” them. Plus, paying users can see you if you’ve been shown as a random match. If I turn someone down, I don’t want to be seen again or possibly get messaged by them again.

To avoid being catfished, a  required  video chat upon first contact. If the person refuses, they're automatically removed from your suggested matches.

Only met like one person from there. Realized that they aren't worth it. Would make every feature free and not shove them behind paywalls. Especially seeing who liked you and every account created would have to be validated so no catfishing.
