Is it a red flag if someone says they love me after only phone calls?

This isn't a scam. I am not being asked for money, they live in the US/I can verify their identity, etc. But we haven't even had a video call, much less met, how can you say you're in love with me? It's a bit much...

Sounds like it. But it won’t be long till you’re asked for money. Scammers usually have to build up their script before they swoop in with the “I need x amount of money for something, can you help me out?”
But I think telling someone you love them so early is a red flag anyway.

Nah. Have had that happen from text alone. And also from calls.

They can love the sides of you they know so far. Which is as good an outcome as any. Probably healthy for both of you to recall that loving half of something does not mean you will feel the same about the complete picture.

Obviously them calling it love so early can still be a red flag but as long as you both understand it is love with caveats that is all fine.
