I would say that the best age gap is about 2 to maximum 3 years of age difference whereas the man MUST be older by that number, mainly in the younger years age bracket (18-30).
The reason being that men tend to be less mature by about that number. If you have a boyfriend the same age, that would mean that he is about 2 years less mature than a woman.
Who, at age 18 wants to be with a 16 year old child? At that age, most boys only have nonsense in their minds and are emotionally not ready for a relationship.
Most women aren't emotionally prepared for a relationship until their mid 40s or later.
If only men would understand that fact and refrain from trying to misuse women for their bodies...
Close in age has the HIGHEST failure rate. Otherwise most people would still be with their partner from high school.
What actually matters for long term success is compatible morals, compatible long term life goals, and some interests in common to participate in together besides just physical intimacy.
My recollection is the most common age gap is 0. The average age gap is 1-2 years in heterosexual relations with the male older than the female.
