Define "trying to be social". I make it really hard for people to approach me. But I can be really social when I want to be. That confuses a lot of people. But, I'm just screening who I engage with very carefully. I don't need or want a hundred fake friends. I want a small group of people I can connect with.

That's an extreme case and probably not healthy. Probably worse than the guy who has problems with some but gets along with others.
