What do you miss most about old‑school dating vs app-based dating today?

I've been thinking about this for a while, looking at how things work nowadays between apps, social media, and various chats, and I realize that the way we meet people has completely changed compared to a few years ago. In the past, everything started much more naturally: a sideways glance in a bookstore, a casual joke exchanged at a party, a friendship slowly turning into something more without overthinking it. Nowadays, instead, it feels like every interaction has to go through a cold selection phase first, between millimeter-curated profiles, bios designed to look interesting, and chats that often end up fizzling out into nothing before even beginning. There's an enormous convenience in all of this, because you can meet people you would never cross paths with in your daily life, but I have the feeling we are losing along the way that thrill of spontaneity that used to make everything feel so real and unexpected.

Looking at how things work today, I often wonder where we are headed and, above all, what others feel in the face of this radical shift. On one hand, we have the safety of a screen that protects us from immediate rejection; on the other hand, a sort of general emotional fatigue, where everyone always seems to be looking for something else just a single swipe away, sometimes forgetting to give a real chance to the person in front of them. The transition between the virtual chemistry created behind a keyboard and the real impact of the first in-person date has become a true psychological battleground, where expectations always risk colliding with reality.

So, what changed the most according to you?

The lack of spontaneity and the coldness of chat conversations

The feeling that there is always "someone else" just a single swipe away

The anxiety and overly high expectations before the first in-person meetup

There was this great little jam experiment.

Researchers set up a tasting table in a supermarket. One day: 24 different jams. Amazing! People flocked over. So many flavours! So much choice!

But, feeling overwhelmed, hardly anyone bought anything.

On another day they put out 6 jams. Fewer people stopped — but the people who did actually engaged and they sold more jam overall.

People are terrible when you give them too many choices. They dither. They start comparing trivial differences. And they find they either can't make a choice or make choices that don't make them feel happy.

Great. So now we know the secret of how to make people happy, right!

Equipped with this deep understanding of human wellbeing someone invented online dating. But instead of making money from selling jam and making people happy, they make money from the number of people that flock there even though most of them leave disheartened.

To me, the biggest problem now is that you no longer have an opportunity to have a conversation with the other person before they've already clicked on to the next profile. Before the internet era, you had to have a telephone conversation before you actually met them, so you had something to build on before you met for dinner, etc.

Only people with zero personality with nothing to offer go the online dating route. Either that or they are just lazy and very desperate. Most of those people on here are anonymous users, which says a lot right there. I always dated back in the day in the old school way. Meeting people is easy if you have a bit of charisma and personality.

well, that would be nothing... since I don't really do "app-based" dating so I really don't know how it is that they do it, and so far... there has not been a need for it, not in my case anyway
