Psychologically, why are some people attracted to little girls?

There is no single cause for it, and the line distinguishing a normal person from a pedophile is thin.

People do not "suddenly" become attracted to little girls. A 40-year old man does not wake up one day and say "wow, little girls are attractive". That's often how the public sees the issue. What's often happening is that a little boy (lets say 10) starts off liking little girls (also 10). This is normal by all accounts, where a grade 5 boy likes another grade 5 girl.

Gradually, as the person ages...11...12...13... he is still attracted to girls around 10, 11 or 12. It's not until he reaches 15 or more that it starts to become more apparent that what he finds "attractive" is not adjusting as he ages. Then he is now 20, or 25... or 30 or 40, and still finds little girls attractive. But what the public sees is a 40 year old man who likes 10 year olds.

Studies have shown that most pedophiles are below-average IQs. Often, those with lower IQs are not mature mentally and psychologically. This may partially explain their liking of young girls who are also mentally/psychologically immature.

There is also a natural factor at play where human males naturally seek females that are younger than them. In the mammalian world, this is almost a universal rule where older, larger males seek younger females because youth = fertility.

In the animal world, as soon as a female is old enough to breed, she is probably going to get pregnant by a dominant male very quickly. If she did not, she would be delaying having offspring and reducing her chances to pass on her genes to the next generation.

Human females hit puberty around 12-14 years old. In a strict biological sense, they're ready to have babies. From an evolutionary sense, human males start taking notice to females sexually at around this age too.

However, in human society, we make judgement calls on what is an "appropriate" age to have sex. There is no correct number. I believe the age in US is 16. Japan is 14. It varies based on no real scientific rationale.

However, I believe that if humans were just another ape species with the intelligence of a gorilla, male humans would all be attracted to girls around the age that girls naturally hit puberty. It would not make sense from an evolutionary perspective for girls to hit puberty at 13-15, and not have children until they're 25+, which is what we're seeing in society today.

I think one possible reason is that those who are deprived of normal relationships and a healthy sex life will tend to develop very unusual ideas of sexuality, since they're deriving it from fantasy rather than reality. They might then go for "easy targets".

Take Catholic priests, for example, with the whole vow of chastity thing. It seems to breed pedophilia, unless the church just had a tendency to hire a mass number of pedophiles all along.

I have not once ounce of sympathy for those who act out their desires or make plans to, my sympathies go to those who never do be because they know it's wrong. And yes, for some serial killers I might have some sympathy for. Many people have endured some messed up things which in turn has caused them to become even more messed up. I'm not excusing any behaviour but I can sympathise with humans being abused so much they become monsters.

It offers power over the victim. Children are oblivious to sexuality, so it is not purely about sexual pleasure. If it is pleasure they are seeking, they would get a high-end prostitute or something. Another issue that makes this type of discussion more complicated than most non-mental health professionals are equipped for is the fact that not all adults who are aroused by children are pedophiles. That is, merely being aroused by children doesn't make one a pedophile by definition.
