Why do some job recruiters fake like they are interested in you?

I applied to a job through Indeed yesterday, and I got a call back today.

Basically they guy was looking at my resume and was asking me some questions, then asked when I was available to start. Then he finished by saying if I do not hear back from him this week it will be next week so I can get an interview, because he has resumes to go over.

Right after the phone call my Indeed status for the company I applied for was marked "Not selected by employer".

I mean why don't they tell you they aren't interested while on the phone?

because they don't decide if you advance or not. That's up to the Manager. Even if they do like you, they like someone else better. You're a commodity to them.
