Why does wood grow mushrooms and green stuff that grows up?

Wood, unless properly sealed and treated, is a porous and absorbs and holds excess water and moisture. Mold growth is due to wood's cellulose and moisture content, cellulose being common food source for mold, which is source of concern in the building industry.
