Are engineering students or students of any stream, brainwashed to be over competitive for the sake of jobs and career?

This question was asked because a 3rd year student from an affluent family committed suicide by jumping from 8th floor of his apartment building, in this week.

He was sorry for not being good in internship and therefore was not sure about the placements.

He was studying in a really reputed college. Hence what was the factor that instilled the really high expectations for placements in a 3rd year engineering student's mind. I am also a 3rd year student, hence I am trying to figure it out.

we don’t need collapsing bridges or crashing aircraft or exploding factories.

it shouldn’t be cutthroat and cruel competition but competition does help squeak out the absolute best possible engineers possible

No, but you'll always have to compete for high value positions. There aren't enough for everyone and everybody wants one.

I don't know about engineering but it's true that some fields are more competitive than others. It's too much pressure for a human to handle. It shouldn't be this way.

As @Andres77 said, engineering is not joke- lives are on the line, to say nothing possible tens of millions in damages from resulting lawsuits.

Update: I don't have figures in front of me, but I understand that Bar Exam suicides among recent law school graduates are far from unknown. In order to become a licensed engineer in the United States, you must pass two exams after graduating. The first is the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Back in my day, when the Great Pyramids were still in the design phase, the exam consisted of two 4-hour sessions with a break for chow between. The second and final exam was the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam, which was far more detailed and much more difficult. I'm a Structural engineer with a Master of Engineer degree in Materials Science. The Structural exam was two full 8-hour days. I don't recall anyone getting up from the exam and walking out (quitting), but I don't doubt that it happens. Even so, unlike an office setting, you are testing in a quiet room with no distractions. There is no copy machine, no phones ringing, and no colleagues chatting about lunch plans. If someone can't hack "working" under ideal conditions, they won't last in the workplace. In the meantime, good luck with your studies.
