Was this text unprofessional to my manager?

It’s 12:03 and I didn’t want to wake her up with a call so I just texted her. My work shift starts at 5am so I wasn’t sure if I should call either that early. To be honest I’m not the best at anything at the job so I don’t think that they’ll want to keep me anyways because I’ve been trying but struggling. I don’t think that I could do stocking all day with a cold. I care about my job and try but I think that I’ll eventually get fired.

Texting isn't a bad idea, but you don't really know if it was received until you get a response to confirm, so you'll have to call someone at 4 am if you don't hear back.

The text itself has too much unnecessary information in it, like the stuff about Covid, your family, drinking teas, and that you "think" you can't work tomorrow. All you need to say " I'm too sick to work my shift. I believe it's the flu or a bad cold and don't want to spread it. I'll be in touch later in the day".

For an hourly job, not unprofessional. For a salary job, it seems less professional than it could have been. Not sure if it's your job to cover your shift or your work, but that would have been good to mention. The text is too long. They don't need to know about the teas and the other stuff. Just include you're sick, you won't be in, solution if you have one, you're sorry for the inconvenience.

If the job has a work phone - you can call 24/7 because the message will go to voice mail if nobody is around to answer. If the job is a personal cell - then your method is right. She probably shuts off the volume at night.

Isn’t there a call in number. Or call in at 5 to the business and tell someone so they can reach out to someone to cover for you.

By that time it would be too late, though. If people aren't scheduled to come in that morning, they will probably be sleeping in. They won't even pick up their phones. (They may have them turned off.)

So the business will have to open late because of a lack of workers.

I work corporate and a text like that is highly unprofessional.
It's short notice
It's late at night.
It brings a problem but not a suggestion of a solution.

But if you work a regular part time job I don't think it should cause trouble

I think it's fine. As long as you give two to three hours notice before work, she shouldn't be able to say anything.

If your job requires a replacement to be called in, you should call, so they can get onto fixing that otherwise it's fine but unecissary detailed.

That's a tough situation. Technically it is unprofessional to text your manager late at night. But you had a valid reason. And how else was she going to be notified of your illness?

Not at all. That’s the beauty of texts. They’ll get it but it’s just a quick look and done. Not like you are antagonizing them with a phone call 👍🙂
