Why are a lot of Mexicans stereotyped as Housekeepers and Maids? I'm just curious?

My recent job was a housekeeper for a big hotel chain, and like 90% percent of them were Mexican? There were only two Filipinos there including myself. The other one was white and like two blacks.

I recently got fired from that job. They say it was my performance but I am not so sure. I feel it was more racially motivated. I happen to be "whiter" than your average Filipina and get mistaken for oriental more than a Filipina. Maybe they looked at me and thought, this lady doesn't belong here. She doesn't look like a housekeeper! I wasn't hired by my supervisors, but someone else, who happend to be the same race as me. I just need some help in analyzing this. I feel what they did was stereotyping!

Because so many maids and housekeepers are Mexican (or other central American/Caribbean). It's a job that doesn't require a great deal of training, and that uses pretty much the same equipment and tools from country to country; it also doesn't require a lot of English, so people who came here without knowing much of the language can do it.

I don't agree that you don't need a lot of English to do the job. What if your boss (Head of the Housekeeping Department), doesn't know Spanish? ! It's a great thing that they usually do, but what if they didn't? ! Come on, there's gotta be another reason besides that! I know that CAN'T one of the reasons! You have to speak to guests too sometimes, if they ask a question (in English), like where they can get more towels, pillowsheets, Ice bags, etc. They may also want to know where such and such is, and that cannot be answered in Spanish, unless the person they are speaking with was Mexican or knew Spanish! It can be done in Mexico, but should NOT be tolerated in the U. S.!

Anyway, I agree with most of the other stuff you said though... unfortunately, people just LOVE to stereotype and judge!
