Be honest. Employers are good at reading BS. Be generic and truthful. "I took time to focus on family." "I chose to have a professional gap year." "I took some time to focus where I want to go." You don't owe them gritty details. Just a plausible this is what I did. And, bonus if you can say something that you did while on that gap. Nursed a dying grandparent. Volunteered at a shelter. Operated a vet clinic in southeast Asia. Red 700 novels. The point is show them that you know how to use your time. Reading 700 novels would get their attention: it shows you can be productive and that's what they're looking for: how can they use you. So the gap itself isn't an issue, it's what you did with it.
Try and be as honest as you can be with bending the truth the best you can, try and get reliable and strong references and if you've not been in employment fill that gap with positive things you've been doing in the meantime.
Had personal business that took precedent over employment.
Won't they want proof?
Are they entitled to it? It's personal business not relevant to the application. You have a legal right to privacy.
