Can you balance your checkbook against canceled checks?

I'm finding out that many young folks don't know how balance their checkbooks and banks don't send you your canceled checks anymore, unless you pay for it.

Yes I can balance a checkbook. It’s a life skill I was taught at an early age. Check numbers and amounts are listed on my statement so I don’t need the canceled checks, but they are available online and downloadable as PDFs if I need or want them.

Yes, but my kids don't use checks. Banking is an app nowadays, but I'm still holding out. No online banking for me.

Nice thing about Money Orders you can stay anonymous as long nothing you put on it is real

True... Sort of. MOs have serial numbers and the gov mandates issuers to report any purchases of MOs over certain amounts. I think $1000 requires a dna sample and the name of your first born.

You don't need the canceled checks if you keep a spreadsheet of checks you write and the bank has statements (paper or online) that you can check against. I find paper statements easier because checking off vs the spreadsheet is easy

I haven't had a checking account in over 30yrs. Last time I had one. They mailed me or I went to picked up the canceled checks

I liked the old way so much better

I'm curious, how do you pay bills for places that won't take credit cards? Do you let them have your banking info for transfers?

Cheques are not used very much in UK anymore,,, I tend to pay cash these days,,,

I have a degree in accounting. I know how to balance a checkbook. My kids know how to do this as well. I don't think that they use checks.

I used to for years and kept a ledger, but I don’t bother anymore, now I just check it online and make sure there’s nothing on there that I didn’t charge or pay for

Never had a chequebook

Only cheques from business dealers and once those clear it's just pull out the cash and carry on
