How do you deal with an employer that is holding you back?

I applied for a promotion. I am more than qualified for the position. I have basically been told that I won't be getting it because I am too valuable where I am now. It has been weeks since I interviewed for the position and it remains vacant. How would you deal with this?

uh hm... i actually think that goes against workers rights. you may have to even threaten them with leaving lol. no i'm serious. you may just want to find another job because your work place sucks. any company that says that is just trash... it's their problem to find a replacement for you since you are more than qualified for that promotion. but they are making this a you problem, which is toxic.

This happened to me once. I put in a 2 week notice. When they pulled me in to ask me why, I told them. They immediately offered me the position I wanted. I told them I didn't want to work for a company that treats it's employees that way and left anyway.

You find a job that does appreciate you and your skills. In the meantime: stay quiet, humble, and do your job: don't go, "above and beyond" or do anything extra because you see it won't get you promoted. Do the bare minimum that's required of your job.

In the meantime, job hunt. You don't have to tell anyone or warn your job you're looking for a better opportunity. And once you find another job- then they'll realize what a valuable asset they lost.

Your opportunities for advancement and higher salary are always better if you switch employers. If you like the company you work for, get a better offer somewhere else and show your current employer. If your so important at your current job, make them pay you the salary of the higher position job. I have my own company and if I want to keep my employees I always match. Even if I can't promote at the time

Send out your resume, go on line and find something better then turn in your notice and move on.
