Have you ever cried in front of your manager?

I normally work in HO but because I was assigned to work on a big project, I was assigned to a different location temporarily for a year. I got back to HO before the project was launched and I took annual leave from work during the go live with my manager’s approval of course. Today I learned there is a lunch gathering like a celebration for going live with this project and the person who handed the list of invites is my manager’s manager (not the one who approved my leave, her manager) and he forgot to add my name!! Because apparently he was looking on whose around and since I was on leave he forget! I am part of the team that he manages and we are only 3 people.
I don’t care about lunch but what hurt me most is how he forgot me and didn’t even try to add my name later! I talked to him and his attitude was off then I cried to my manager because I was so hurt. She talked to him then he simply spoke to PMO and they added my name.

Well no. I have never cried to a manger. Now as a manger I have had employees cry to me. I have had grown men break down to me, crying. When it's about a personal issue I am very supportive, but when it's about work issue, I have no time for it. Be happy you are not a man, that did this. Because if a man came to me crying... come on dude, seriously.

Now it does sound to me, that it was an invite to his team, and since you work for a different manger, he did not invite you. You cried, you got your way, but only he knows if you truly deserve it. But it sounds to me that you took leave during a critical stage of the project and that left everyone on his team with more work to pick up the slack... and now that you are back, you want full recognition for work that others had to finish.

Did you go to him and inform or ask if it would okay to take leave during this time period, as a professional courtesy? Or did you go to your own manger and request it then after the fact leave him and his team hanging? Because if that is what you did, then you ran and end around on him, and that hurt his team.

When employees come to me crying, I tell them all the same thing. Your tears mean nothing to me... so leave and get yourself right and together... then come back and try again. I will not be swayed by your emotions; this is a business not a day care.

I hope you enjoy your party, because ever teammate you left hanging while they pushed that ball across the goal line, without you... they all know what you did to get your foot back in the door. I assure you that when your manager went to him. He said fine, I will invite her... but next time I have a project don't send her back. I would rather accomplish the task with my own team, she was sent here to help, and she bailed on the team. But I will appease her, in order to maintain relationships, but I don't ever want her on my team again.

Thats all closed door stuff, that mangers will talk about manger to manger... but that's all you have accomplished with this.

We are a small team and he told my manager not to allow me take leave but she was able to manage it. Plus, work was not effected, so what’s the problem? Taking leave from work is my right especially since I haven’t taken leave since may and it was only few days.
My line manager made effort for work not to get effected and it wasn’t so he had no right to treat me this way.

All a matter of perspective I do not know the details of then what you have told me. But there are two sides to every story, and I am only hearing ours. Bottom line, it was critical time period, he wanted everyone on board, and regardless of if it was your right or not... if you deserved it or not... you make a choice for whatever reason to do it during a critical time.

Now you want to cry about it... and you got your way. Thats what happened, and now you want to be validated for work others had to finish. That leaves a mark, and sour taste in people's mouths.

Yo, that seriously sucks what happened to you. I've never cried in front of my manager before but I totally get why you would in that situation. A couple things:

1. Don't sweat the lame ass lunch - sounds like office politics BS. You know your work speaks for itself.

2. Props to your manager for having your back. Must feel good to know at least one person above you respects your grind.

3. That other dude clearly wasn't paying attention to who's really putting in work. His mistake will catch up to him eventually.

4. Try not to let toxic office politics get you down. Easier said than done, I know. But you only gotta prove yourself to yourself, ya feel?

5. If it keeps bugging you, maybe try joking about it now to take the power back. "Hey next time don't forget me at the lame lunch!" with a laugh.

Either way, keep crushing it like you do. This too shall pass - just means more excuses to treat yourself after work! Stay up luv.

I cried when a boss fired me on the spot in front of a PI and lab manager. I knew I wasn't the best at my job, but I was clearly putting in 120%, working extra hours and skipping lunch breaks just to fulfill the duties outlined to me. I was doing the job, I just wasn't "driven enough" because she realized only a master's student would be worthy of working on her experiments.

As I was crying, she then got mad that I was overreacting couldn't take it "like a professional." I was 21, it was my first real job, and I had been in that same department for 3 years. The PI who didn't really know me that well intervened because he was worried about a lawsuit (she said some racist things from time to time).

They gave me 6 weeks pay to figure it out and very deliberately told me not to bother applying for unemployment, as I was agreeing to take the six weeks severance. This is definitely illegal and this was from Harvard University.

I did a few weeks ago. My boss pissed me off so much that I cried and cursed him :D And then gave him a resignation letter.

But he did everything to make it work. As I don't like him, I have to admit, he put in a lot of effort. So I'm staying... for now

But I cry quite often. I have worked here for over two years, and everyone knows it already, so no big deal :D

When I left my last job, nearly 3/4th my team put in for a transfer because they weren't going to like my replacement. They all told my "manager" of this at my going away party when the closest thing I had to a manager was giving me my going away award and the "thanks for everything" speech that always accompanies that. He and I always had sort of a love/hate relationship. He thought I coordinated their mass exodus. I told him I knew nothing about it. He cursed me out and stormed out of the restaurant.

After a while I went out to check on him because I wanted to make sure he knew he was coming back in to pick up the tab for everybody. He told me outside I "was still a giant a-hole, but [he] wished there was a moment in [his] career when [he'd] inspired people that much, and [he'd] never admit it in public, but [he] saw what it was about [me] that made people respond like that, and he really was sad to see me go" He said for all my shite there wasn't going to be a replacement like me he could get. Then he added "hopefully" to the end as one more jab.

I told him "that meant a lot to me coming from some rear ech [pronounced esh... for echelon] memo-signer." ... and there may have been someone walking by cutting onions. He told me I still looked "like a cross between a hobo muj and a chai boy that grew up and got ugly." Then he hugged me and told me he wished me luck in the next chapter. The onions got to him, too.

I hope life has been kind to him since. Male pattern baldness was not... but I mean at least the rest of life.

Once. I had screwed up so bad. But all my team came to my desk, said I owed them a beer and we pulled a 24 hr shift to recover from my screw up. Not a single person complained

i cried not because I made the mistake, but because of feeling humbled before my team and my boss

that day- with me feeling buried and suffocated- was the day which defined me as a leader
