I have mental illnesses and I work long shifts a few times a week. My employers aren’t aware that I have high functioning schizophrenia, major depression and severe anxiety disorder. I’m quite ok except I have very low energy. Long shifts stress me out. Should I quit now, or work for 3 more weeks, then quit, after I’ve made more money, which would be useful over Christmas and also, I’d be able to get a reference for a job that I might be better suited for (flexible working hours)?
Hmm that's a tough call. On one hand, working through Christmas will get you more cash which is always good, but your mental health is the most important thing. Here are a few things to consider:
- Can you manage the stress of long shifts for 3 more weeks without making your symptoms worse? Only you know how your mental health might be affected.
- Is there any way you can cut back your hours a bit to make it less taxing? Maybe explain to your boss you need a lighter schedule short-term.
- Will quitting now prevent you getting a good reference? If your performance has been solid up to this point, you may still get a decent reference even if you don't last till Christmas.
- Christmas money vs preventing a potential mental health setback. That cash would be nice, but your wellbeing comes first.
I'd say really think about what YOU need right now to stay as healthy as possible over the holidays. If you think 3 more weeks will push you over the edge, don't feel like you have to tough it out just for a reference or cash. Your sanity is more important in the long run. But if you think you can manage it, go for the extra funds. Ultimately do what you feel is best for you - don't feel obligated either way. Your health has to come first.
