Should I wait until after Christmas to apply for volunteer work?

I’m looking at volunteering in a soup kitchen. If they’ll have me. I’ve found one that wants a working with children check and I imagine a police check, too. However, I’m unemployed (on the pension because of severe depression and anxiety that render me too tired to cope with the demands of paid employment); and my money only goes so far.

I have numerous friends and relatives to shop for and post gifts for, all in a short space of time. I also have my special diet, so I don’t get diabetes. If I’m going to get everything else right for everyone else, I’ll need to postpone my volunteer plans until just after Christmas.
