If your financial situation changed and your job wouldn't give you a pay raise, would you quit?

I thought a lot of people might be in this situation not because of their pay, or their job, but because of external factors. It came up when I was talking with a guy at work at his wits end because his homeowner's insurance tripled.

Now he either gets a raise, or sells his house and looks for another job.

Put in some OT and get that raise

There are definitely places that pay more in the same industry down here, there are just more compromises to take, like they're more remote, and require working swing shifts rather than a concrete 9-5 mon-fri schedule.

Like the last place I was at paid 30% more, and I worked 72- 96 hours a week as opposed to 40... but I worked 72-96 hours a week days and nights, every day of the week rotating.

Everything is a trade off I suppose. My days of working that many hours are done outside of a major catastrophe.

For me I have a pretty cushy union job with great pay and great benefits. Thank God for that I might add. Unless the place goes out of business I don’t plan on working anywhere else and the chances of that happening are sim to none.

I've always lived within my means, but yeah, if I feel like I'm not getting paid enough for my work I bring it up, if it doesn't change then I start applying and take a better offer. If one doesn't exist I'm simply overvaluing myself.

There are plenty if jobs out there. The problem is most of them involve wearing a paper hat and a name tag. it took me over a year to find something that paid good

Depends on the length of time you have invested in your job. If you have worked there for 15 years and gained seniority, why would you leave? Why abandon all your increased vacation time that comes with your seniority? You are also near the top pay for your job. If you quit you go back to square 1 and would start at the bottom again in a new job.

I do and don't agree with you. He has been around there a considerable amount of time though he's younger than me. On my end I blow to where the grass is greener and have only seen both my potential and current earnings increase by leveraging my experience.

For him I don't think he's advocating enough for himself. Likely he could get 200 more a week just by asking for it, but he doesn't, and it will lead from a declining situation to an unsalvageable one, and he is in a spot that's difficult to replace.

If you're working for yourself it's much more difficult than giving yourself a raise. I went back to work from owning my own company because the gamble was too high along with the stress of having so many bosses/clients

Always. I own a business and I pay my staff very well actually but I always impart on them that if they find a place that will pay them more and I am for some reason unable to they absolutely should go to the place that pays more should they not like it they are welcome to return. If a place does not pay you enough to survive you do not owe it the effort for it to survive. Every single job should be paying a livable wage at the lowest point and pay goes up from there.

I agree with that, beyond the current situation, learning a new skillset puts you at an advantage if anything else comes up. Like I don't see Ebenezer Scrooge coming out for Christmas and giving everyone boiled goose...
