Would you make a good salesperson? And would you buy from this guy?

Question

So I joined my mom in car shopping… The hot salesman told her  “ I’m new here. I’ve only been here about 2 months so I don’t know too much about these cars yet.”  Thats like the worst thing you could admit. Then I told him that I knew about cars and could help him out.  But then he spent the day talking to me about our love for NFS and Forza. He also kept directing all his questions at me instead of trying to make a sale to the actual buyer, my mom . He even tried to give me the keys to test drive instead of her. So she mad af 😂. When he tried to give her his business card she was like  “ Are you sure you don’t want my daughters number?”  That shit was mad awkward. And then my grandma   told him “You’d make a better sale if you showed your calves off around here like the other young men.  Why do you have on pants when they are all wearing shorts?” Lol sooo awkward. Then my mom told him  “ you have pretty eyes, they’re so mesmerizing you could’ve made a sale if I was able to look up at you.”  I meeean, I loved his seafoam green eyes too! Anyways, she tells him she wants an SUV and within a certain price range. He starts showing her mini vans instead. And he shows prices that are up to 30k over what she asked for.  She said she felt insulted lmao. He was definitely losing her as a customer. He called me yesterday to tell me when our next appointment is. So  I tried to give him tips on what not to say to my mom but if he still fcks this up 🤷‍♀️   I also told him to stay in her price range and only show her SUVs.  I even told him the SUVs she prefers and this clown was like “but I rather show her this.”  Like at this point, he’s about to lose me too because he's too stubborn. I’m curious to see if he actually dresses the part like my grandma advised lol.  But the boy needs some serious training before he loses his job. He even told us that he's already lost 3 people.   Why would you admit that to people you’re trying to sell too?  #FeelFreeToList

I never thought of myself as a great salesperson but... Damm lol.

Some of it seems like pretty typical beginner mistakes though. They're all classics.

He failed to identify the buyer, failed to identify the problem they want solved, insulted the buyer and after that it went down hill with nitpicking over his outfit.

So his head is stuck in the clouds all day which kills his capacity for self awareness. Sounds like a typical, fidgeting kid who hasn't found their purpose yet or developed their ego in a healthy way.

But he should stick with it. Seems like someone with a lot of potential if he can get the right people around him. Might take a mushroom trip to do it.

When I first started off on my own again. I was working at a bar and found somebody who wanted to connect me with my first client.

I was so nervous because I knew I was a bad salesman and that I didn't have an office, or money to rent one and I was currently working at a bar. No sane person would sign up for this but the guy believed in me.

Makes the introduction with a woman who owned a small business making lotions and stuff. She was kinda towards the beginning of the trend that started over the coronavirus period.

She was selling like crazy, making awesome profits and knew the marketing was the last piece of the puzzle. So I would set up meetings at the Cheesecake Factory, Ruth Chris eventually I started to run out of fancy restaurants so I started holding the meetings at locations we were scouting out. I hired an assistant to write notes and set up dates and things. Bought us corperate emails. Just trying to distract from the fact I didn't have an office as much as possible. 😂

It worked for the most part but I was trying to do a lot of things by myself that I usually had help doing. And it was the help of a mentor who understood how all the parts of a sale fit together better. The power points and showmanship and budgets etc. I did a great job with these things individually, but I didn't make them fit together as well as I should have and it made her uncomfortable.

So we had a budget, we had a date, I spent a ton of money trying to get the sale and I'm with the girl, we couldn't find a place to have the zoom call, it was raining. She said she didn't understand something which in the context meant she's on the fence leaning towards a no and I just lost it 😂

I got so angry because she started off one way, things went another way and ultimately, I didn't know if there was something I was missing or if she was being indecisive. Granted. This was going to be 3 ads with a total budget of something like $15,000 it was a lot of work.

But I guess what I'm trying to say is sales is a learning and growing experience. It demands a ton of patience, empathy, mind reading and skills that simply aren't taught anywhere other than the STREEEETSSS. You're going to be embarrassed just like you're going to have moments you need to be careful not to let it go to your head too much. It's

It's easy to laugh at that kid make an ass out of himself but I'll still give him respect for getting out there and trying. He just needs to live a little more life and develop his character.

Nah it's not my thing. There's people that are just naturally good af at it and I'm not even close. I worked with a guy as soon as he walked in the door for the interview and shook my hand I told the boss hire this guy, he's gifted, and he was. I wasn't doing the interview I just had to welcome him and get him some coffee but I knew :).

I like to work on things and spend my energy where I can get a return for it and even if I dedicated my whole life to it I wouldn't be as good as that guy. So I wanna work on things where I can make more progress.

There was this other guy he also got hired at the same time and he was hopeless. He had terrible social skills. And he believed in these outdated rules for sales even I would've been better at sales than this guy and I'm not good. But I got the concept of what you had to go for more than him. He would argue with the customer. Like the custommer would want to buy the product and he would argue with them about some stupid detail and talk them out of buying it. That's how bad he was. He didn't understand at all that the interpersonal element is important he just wanted to follow this step by step list of what to do and it wasn't working at all.

So are you gonna go on a date with him even though he sucks at sales? :)

First of all, I want to say that the last time I was car shopping for a very specific car with a specific price range, the salesman started with showing me completely different makes, models, and double my price range. That happened at 4 different dealerships. I don't know why they think that's a good sales tactic and they lost us every time.

To answer your question though, yes and no. I have done sales and was outperforming my colleagues, but it was a product I could honestly stand behind and it showed. I left when the company's standards fell and it I couldn't say I was selling quality anymore.

I won't lie, so sales is definitely not for me.

I could. I can have a pleasant demeanor and I can be persuasive in a sly way, but it can make me despise myself.

There is a limit.

It is one of the skills that I have and it is considered positive, but I don't fully like it. I don't even know how I have it.
It is hard to explain.

Yes I would be a good salesman. I'm pretty good at finding out what people need, making them want that thing, and then finding it for them at a reasonable price.

I wouldn't buy anything from him 😂 he's a great example of a terrible salesman. I've had quite a lot of fun making sure people like him can't get a sale

First I would never make a good salesman; I am too honest. On the plus side I do like helping people and I think that comes across.

This guy seems to be particularly inept. Not addressing the actual buyer, not showing SUVs. i guess the price range s always fluid though.

This guy is not a good salesman. I was in sales for many years. I found that the customer needed to be gently steered towards the product i wanted to sell him. The hard sell just pisses most people off.

Car salesmen are all ripoff artists , the trick is to have as much control over the process and the guts to walk away.

My job is 40/60 sales/design. I much prefer the design side, but the sales side lets me do more of what i want to on the design side. I don't personally bring in many new clients but I do build up billing for existing clients and regularly increase billing from year to year. A large part of that I'm pretty sure comes from the combined sales/design role.

Your story reminds me of the treatment my father got at various German car dealerships plus a lot of arrogance, along the lines of „be glad we even sell you something!“. Yeah, he went elsewhere to spend his money.

I have been in sales/ finance my whole life and that person is a horrible says person. You should never tell the buyer your lack of experience for one, and treat every customer like they're a potential sale. He showed his lack of experience when he said " I would rather show you this" and also not giving your mom his full attention. Find another dealership or another salesperson.
