there's a thing called bore out. i basically had this all through my primary education. i remember being excited to get to school and learn stuff when i was a kid. but i was quickly slowed down by repetition and boring tasks cause the education system has to work for the slow kids as well... so i got bored out and didn't pay attention. just did what's necessary to pass. it's like the brain is really smart in ressource management. if it senses that full performance isn't needed, it won't give full performance. that's why above average intelligent people sometimes only deliver average or below average results. cause their brains decided to run efficiency mode instead of performance mode.

i personally knew that was the case for me cause my teachers litterally told my parents that they think i'm retarded (which was still an ok word to use then), so my parents took me to a psychiatrist and figured out i'm a gifted kid. and the funny thing is: the higher i got in the educational food chain, the better my grades got. which is really counter intuitive.

How do you know these people are "smart" and what tests are "easy".

If you refer to standardized test that use simple A, B, C and D prewritten answers, some smart people may see the higher complexity as there are often many more aspects than the 4 predefined ones. And they start overthinking, and crossing off more than just one of the four. Which also include a wrong answer, even when the answer in the peoples mind is much closer to reality and more correct than the prewritten one. But they don't have to posibility to give that answer.

Its all a question of how the tests are built and how they are evaluated.

And offcourse you got exam anxiety and other psychological problems.
