Why is the public school system such an abyss?

My nephew is on pace to be the valedictorian at his 5A high school, but he cannot even explain what a SHADOW is, for God's sake.

He's a Straight A's student and has never made less than an A in school, but he can't even explain something as simple as a shadow. What the HELL are they teaching in public schools these days?

It has been going downhill for decades but during covid it has really taken a nosedive. The lockdowns were really a 2 year paid vacation for the teachers. The teachers union really dictated their terms to the Biden administration.

Many states required standardized tests but after covid so many students would fail the exam that instead of addressing the underlying problem they discontinued the test so that now there is no accountability.

I teach at a local college and a lot of my students were in high school during the covid years. They cannot do basic math or write above a 6th grade level.

The US public school system is a joke. Over the years standards have been lowered more and more, all in the name of "fairness". But at what cost? The US ranks 31 in the world for education. That's despicable.
