Do you think todays teachers have gone too soft?

I work at a high school as a janitor, a couple teachers classrooms are messy from candy wrappers and pencils constantly on the floor. I thought the rule was no food or drinks and for kids to clean up wrappers after themselves. Are todays teachers just too soft?

No, the problem isn't the classroom teachers, so much... Most of the problems in public education come from the administrators (who are often failed teachers, themselves). Classroom teachers catch an unbelievable amount of crap for taking any kind of initiative with their students.

I went through k-12 right after Columbine, so I saw the transition happen. Parents were understandably freaking out about mass shooters in schools, so the government (s) instituted "No Child Left Behind" and "Zero Tolerance" policies in a good faith attempt to address the WILD range of performance outcomes of students. The idea was that by cracking down on student-student violence in any form, and by investing in your low-performing students, you could prevent people from falling through the cracks.

Unfortunately, these policies had the exact opposite real world effects. Zero tolerance meant that students would be punished for physically defending themselves, so bullies got comfortable running their mouths. The teachers know that if they intervene, it'll turn into tons of paperwork and a whole big investigation and political shit storm that they simply don't want to deal with.

I never had that rule at any school I've been to.
I also don't recall ever seeing the janitor clean a classroom.
Instead the teachers cleaned up their own classrooms, and the janitor only did non classroom areas like bathrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, etc.

Teache5s hands are tied. Smacking is abuse. Shouting is abuse. Saying a negative word is abuse. Just pointing out a students bad behaviour today's is probably classed as racism, or some other prejudice (cos they female. Cos they non binary. Cos they pan) ... really... teachers have no power. It's just as bad being a parent to be honest. Imagine having 50 or the little b**tards lol.

The only "thing" schools can do is issue a detention. But if child refuses to go? My daughters like not attended about 20 she's been given.

A lot of today's kids are menaces. They will report teachers for the littlest thing. So I don't think it's not necessarily teachers have gone soft but the kids have gotten worse and the parents condone the behavior.

In places like China or Korea, you can punish bad kids with beatings but in America, all you can do is yell and threaten legal action. You are not allowed to hit them and if a principal gets too many complaints, he might ignore issues like gum on the chairs when the teacher wants to sue the student and get them removed from his classroom.

I don’t think so, but I went to a private school where kids were mostly relatively well behaved (though everyone had phones in violation of school rules)
