Why are they telling me to keep my redundancy quiet?

I got made redundant from my job a few days ok.

My manager is telling me to keep it confidential.

Do I have to listen to them?

What am I supposed to tell my friends when I'm leaving?

It's my life too, not just theirs.

I take it you have been giving official written redundancy notice, if so have they offer you any incentive over and above the statutory payment in the form of enhanced settlement in return for your silence? If not, then you are fully entitled to notify those around you accordingly.

However, perhaps it's worth baring in mind should you ever at such time ask for a reference from this employer... Although they are not allowed to give a bad derogatory one, they can if they so wish, refuse to give one entirely, which then clearly shows their disatisfaction in you.

What do you mean "made redundant"? You mean fired and they're not replacing you?

Yeah, it's confidential bc they're not replacing you, HOWEVER you need to apply for jobs so you do need to explain to new employers that the position was clipped, hence your need for a new job.

Don't tell your friends till the boss says it's ok. They'll figure it out.

They just don't want people being "vultures" to get your old post.
