Why should women in the retail and service industry have to suffer creeps or be fired?

It depends on the type of management that you have. But I’ve seen women get written up and even fired before because they told a creepy dude to fuck off or go away.

If these women are even professionally nice to these men they take it as if they are attracted to them. But if they say anything or do anything else. These creepy dudes will go and bitch to management that they were rude. Enough complaints and you will get written up and eventually fired.

I’ve seen people get into trouble over a single complaint. Anyone can complain even if it’s unfounded and most the managers are too lazy to investigate what really happened. So it’s easier to just yell at someone or write them up.

It’s a basic sales job. If you don’t get the customer to buy something you’re useless to the team.

So you’ll meet the entitled bitches and creeps who come in with a nasty version of “the customer’s always right, now kneel before me and beg for my favor” attitude… and then buy nothing after taking up your whole afternoon. (I’ve worked retail… I know.)

At some places this is met with the support of your colleagues (“misery loves company” mentality) and at some you certainly ARE expected to cater to the client at all costs.
(Ridiculous? Yes… yes it is.)

Employers have a legal responsibility for your safety at work and that includes protecting you from unwanted attention. However telling them to fuck off could reflect badly. A simple but firm and polite reject in a loud clear voice would be your best bet. Then if your dismissed you'll have witnesses so you can sue.

Suffering idiots , weirdos , vagrants , creeps is something we all have had to do at times. Speaking as a former retail catering manager I believe I’ve had to deal with the full spectrum of societal rejects and degenerates so I’m well practiced on de-escalating those types of interactions that plague those in that industry including those in restaurants and bars where staff work the floor to make money.

The simple answer is NO ! they shouldn’t have to put up with it or even breathe the same air as these cretins and vile creatures but it has to be dealt with in a calm , professional and respectful manner to control the situation and in a way that helps employees deal with it in the future or life in general. Name calling never helped anyone do that and let’s be honest when being friendly , with smiles and perhaps flirtatious to earn tips etc it takes skill and experience to handle those that don’t understand where the lines are.

It comes down to the leadership of the organization and knowing your people. Most retail and service industry managers are complete cowards who would never tell a customer to leave and not come back. Yet sometimes that's exactly what's needed to maintain a great atmosphere and an overall good clientele. No one wants to patronize a place full of assholes. Instead these dumb assholes focus on not offending the people who are the problem. Coincidentally, it means they never have to go face to face with one of these people.

It depends on management on how they handle it. Probably shouldn’t be telling people to fuck off, but if you’re telling someone no/to stop and they don’t then it is your managers responsibility to step in, have that conversation and if necessary ask that person to leave.

They absolutely shouldn't. In my years in that type of work, I ended up banning 2 customers over that, and both tried several times to be served after that but were rejected. I don't play that way. Whatever business was lost was more than made up for by other customers happy not to be in an uncomfortable situation. It also sends a clear message that such treatment isn't tolerated.

It’s honestly messed up how often this happens. Women in retail or service jobs are expected to smile and be nice no matter what, even when someone’s being creepy or crossing a line. And if they stand up for themselves, they risk getting in trouble or even fired. Management often sides with the customer just to avoid drama, without looking into what actually happened. It’s unfair and exhausting, and it needs to change. No one should have to choose between their safety and their job.

I say everyone, especially women have the right to be safe at work. If you’re a woman experiencing sexual harassment or violence in the workplace you should have a way to report and have the situation resolved immediately.

Define creeps. I've worked retail and a lot of the women basically described most creeps as guys they weren't attracted to.

At the end of the day if you are a customer and some girl is needlessly rude and insulting why wouldn't you complain and try to get them fired.
