I would say everybody deserves respect, regardless of what job they do, or even if they have a job. Respect is only less important when somebody mistreats others. I believe respecting evil people is optional, while respecting good people is mandatory, but since we have a reduced knowledge of others due to human limits in assessment and social skills, we should respect all broadly non threatening individuals to make up for the chance that our judgment of others could be faulty.

But I do believe we should distinguish between procedural respect and social respect. Every non threatening person deserves social respect, but not all employees deserve procedural respect, because procedural respect involves pious regard for the views, opinions and manner of labour of employees. Because there has to be a degree of uncontested leadership, and top down processing of labour division at a business, and procedural respect must be monopolized to those in the upper tiers of the establishment to make the organization peaceful and stable for all members served by it with a lesser division of procedural respect for those with reduced pivotal capacity involving the nucleus of the business.

Think custodians don't matter. Let the garbage back up, the restrooms get filthy, and lightbulbs fail without replacement for a month. Then reconsider your respect for custodians.

One time I had a job as a head custodian for a while (technically I was doing maintenance, not cleaning) but I was making as much money as the first year teaching staff. Sometimes they gave me too much respect. The principals would call me into their emergency meetings when there was a power outage. I didn't have a clue why all the power was out or what to do about it, lol.

Yes, of course they do. Without them, things would get dirty and cluttered, leading to disease and accidents. Their work protects the staff and students, and it deserves fair pay and equal recognition.
