I never understood why some people don’t walk to me. I’m kind, funny, lovable and honest. One of my coworkers (let’s call her Maya) I think she’s seems cool but I don’t talk to her much. Maya does great me back when I say hi but she doesn’t really talk to me as much as my three coworkers. Some of my coworkers know I’m autistic. Not everyone does. I don’t know if it’s because I’m autistic if that’s the reason why she doesn’t speak to me. Maya only speaks to my three coworkers that I work with. She gives them hugs and talks to them but never me. When I speak she doesn’t look at me or ignores what I say. My boss won’t even look at me. She knows I’m at work but come on! This happens every time I have a job. It happened in school like middle school and high school. When I say hi to Maya, she’ll say hi and quickly talk to the others. She only speak to me when she needs something or when it’s work related. The others she interacts. It pretty much hurt. She once got irritated when I didn’t get the question or point she was asking. She was like, “Ugh! Forget it! I’m going to something that will actually understand better than you. No offense.” She’s very blunt too.
I’m usually a very likable person and it hurts when someone ignores me or doesn’t interact with me. I would think everyone will like me or adore me because of my good nature. I don’t understand why Maya would speak or others but not me?

It can be challenging when we feel excluded or misunderstood, especially in professional settings. Sometimes, individuals may unintentionally distance themselves due to misunderstandings or lack of awareness about autism. You might consider having an open conversation with Maya, sharing that you'd like to communicate more effectively. Sometimes, such discussions foster understanding and inclusion. Additionally, reflecting on specific interactions that went well might provide insights into making connections. Remember, building meaningful relationships takes time, and not every interaction defines your worth or capabilities. Surround yourself with supportive colleagues and continue being the genuine person you are.
