My first retail job was working as a cashier in a store that was like a smaller version of a Wal-mart selling a bit of everything. Literally day 1, I was accused of stealing and called into the bosses office and made to sit there while a machine recounted my till. Turns out there was some sticky 100 dollar bill that wasn't counted the first time. The boss was like, well, I figured it would be crazy for you to steal day one (not to mention there were like 100 cameras pointed at you anyway!)

The job pretty much went downhill from there. I had to work 10 hour days on my feet in a booth all day long. The boss was not giving us our required break times at all. The final straw for me came when he gave us a memo that stated that all the female employees (all of which were cashiers in our section) had to start wearing high heels, skirts, and some minimal make-up. This was insane. You try wearing heels for 10 hours straight on your feet! I didn't take that at all. I gathered all the women there and told them I was going to be contacting the head corp about this because no one could see anything below our waists anyway being in a friggin' booth, and none of that would help us sell any more products as we weren't models, we were cashiers.

Corporate immediately wrote back saying they NEVER required any of this and literally the next day, the boss said, it would not be a requirement. I ended up leaving very shortly after that once I discovered a few more things he wasn't doing by the book. Guess he messed up because no sooner had I left, than there was a phone call saying how I was the best cashier with the best selling record, and we could work on some things. Nope, too late.

It feels good to read such stories for a country like the US 👌🏼
Because I had the impression that management could do whatever the f they wanted to do

I had a manager at one point that told me I needed to wear makeup and get my nails done to be more ‘professional’. When asked if the men had to do that too she told me that was ridiculous. Needless to say I said that I would not and if it was an issue I’ll happily reach out to HR to get their opinion. Needless to say she never brought it up again

I worked retail at a dollar store. It was probably one of my favorite jobs. I liked my manager, coworkers and a lot of the customers that came in. It also helped me develop much needed social skills since I was super quiet and it forced me to talk to people. Honestly if it paid better, gave me full time and provided all of the benefits I get at my current job I’d happily go back. It was so much less responsibility

At a grocery store. It was fine. A good learning experience. I think I worked maybe 20-25 hours a week

  • My first job in retail was at a local bookstore in my hometown. It was a fantastic learning experience that taught me valuable skills such as customer service, inventory management, and teamwork. I discovered the importance of communication and adaptability, which has helped me throughout my career. Engaging with customers and meeting their needs gave me a sense of satisfaction, and I enjoyed being surrounded by books, which fueled my passion for learning. That experience laid the foundation for my future career endeavors, shaping my work ethic and professional values.

I had fun working fast food. It was nice, because I had just moved, so, I met a few people I was gonna be going to school with. We all became friends. I also had good hrs, dinner hrs during the week and breakfast hrs on weekends. It was always busy.

My first job was a school holidays student job when I was 16. It was for a bar, during the rush hour I helped as waitress, if there was less going on I was handing out flyers helping getting tourists in. That part was pretty chill, taking orders was more stressful because of languages issues

Worked in an Art and Drafting Supply store. In two months I was made the Mgr of the Drafting Department and a month after that, I was an "Assistant Mgr" which meant I was stuck with closing down the register and the store when the owner/boss wanted to leave early.

My first job was sales executive. Boy, it was so hectic. So exhausting that I barely had time to eat. I often skipped my meal and worked overtime but I was really good at my job.
