I had to fire someone for the first time today.

im a manager at a restaurant and the other day I had to send a server home because she served an alcoholic beverage to a guest who ordered the non-alcoholic version of the drink.

and unfortunately that’s an automatic term 😵‍💫 we don’t play around about alcohol violations and unfortunately it had to be done.

luckily, she was very understanding of it and the conversation went well so it wasn’t too hard.

but it was the first time that I had to tell someone they were fired myself, so it was a bit stressful

Yes, I have. I was an intermediate director, head of a department, but got my orders from the general director. The best way to handle a situation like this is to not let it get personal. Start the conversation with 'the company has decided that...' It takes away part of the drama, but it's not a situation anyone likes to be in.

yes, where I used to work we hired a new office manager. A few weeks later my boss mentioned to me that this guy would come back from lunch half loaded. He wanted to fire him. I really liked this guy and he had a lot of good ideas and I wanted to keep him. I said I would have a talk with him. So the next day he comes in carrying a cup of coffee. He was visibly impaired. I took him into my office and fired him

I once had a boss feel so humility about firing me that he offered to drive me home as a consolation prize, in the middle of a busy work day. Don’t beat your self up if you are doing that. Somebody intelligent enough to work at a busy bar, is intelligent enough to find another job within 5 days.

It's part of being a direct manager of a team. You hire new people, and sometimes you have to fire them because of issues that arise or simply because work is getting slow.

The best way to handle a situation like this is to not let it get personal. Start the conversation with 'the company has decided that...' It takes away part of the drama, but it's not a situation anyone likes to be in.

I have managed somebody to leave an organisation three times. It hurts. But it has to be done. Beyond being honest and humane, there's nothing you can do to make it a good experience for anyone involved.

However, the job terminations in my companies are usually carried out for me by my officers after I approve the termination recommendations.
