Interviewer said I was a better fit for another role. Should I convince them otherwise?

As the title reads, I went to an interview for a specific role and was told that I was a better fit for a different role; however, there was no immediate opening for that role. But the role I was applying for had an opening. I am desperate for a full-time entry-level job. The reason the person said I would be a greater fit for the other one was that my previous job involved more structured tasks versus multitasking, which is what she is looking for. I guess the way I answered her question also made her think that way. Now I am thinking if there is a way for me to convince her otherwise and to give me a shot at the coordinator role instead?

I think it's a waste of your time. She's made up her mind and she wants someone who's experienced at what she thinks the job requires.

The problem with not having experience, is not having experience. This is the way when you're starting out and seek to move up.

Look elsewhere to get that experience you want. AFTER the interview is usually not the time to try to resee an interviewer. If you couldn't do it while there, it's a lost cause.

You can recall her, but be prepared to get refused. You'd need to offer her valid experience of SOME KIND that proves you are ready to perform the job. Not that you seek to learn ON the job. Good luck.

They have decided, that's the end of it, perhaps ask them what their assessment of your skills is,,,

But maybe they are just letting you down gently,,,

I wouldn't. First, the recruiter has formed an opinion you are unsuitable for the role. That's unlikely to change. Second, it's likely they already had other candidates that in their opinion were more suitable.

You can try, but do it thoughtfully and once.

Send a short, professional email:

- Thank them for the interview and feedback.
- Acknowledge their concern (multitasking/less structure).
- Give 2–3 concrete examples from past experience where you successfully juggled multiple tasks, handled ambiguity, or prioritized under pressure.
- State clearly that you remain very interested in the current coordinator role and believe you can succeed in it.
- Add that you’d also be open to future openings in the other role.

Then move on with your search; don’t argue beyond that one message.
