Is there an office dress code where you work, even if it’s mostly unwritten?

Would you all dress more or less the same way, between colleagues and management? And is it different if you have direct contact with clients?

At my last job it was business casual. I'd say most of the dress code was unwritten, but it was also kinda lose. I could wear skirts and dresses that were slightly above the knee, and I could wear any color I wanted so long as it was solid.

For the most part I think I'd of dressed the same, but I'd like to have been able to wear outfits that had more then a single color

Sort of. We have uniforms we get each year but you can where what shorts/skirts/pants you want.

Only once did I have to wear a uniform. In all other places I've worked, classic pants and a neutral colored shirt were the unwritten norm for men.

@SueShe I bet the members wish that was our uniform. Some of the old guys can be pervy. You can just tell.

Every year they pick a few colors to represent that summer and we get a bunch of polos. Nice thing is we don’t have to pay for them. Then it is white shorts, skirt or pants. We have to have those.

Yes, I am required to wear a uniform, with a hat but the hat, I can take off once I'm inside the "office." If I'm anywhere that serves alcohol, I can lose my job if I have my uniform on.

The last place I worked we had a dress code but only HR knew what it was. People were expected to dress professionally, which most were able to do without prompting.

I’ve worked in environments across the spectrum:

- Corporate / consulting / finance: There’s usually a clear (often unwritten) code. Suits or smart business attire for client meetings; business casual when in the office without clients. Management is usually slightly sharper—better tailoring, shoes, watch—same “code,” higher standard.

- Tech / startups / creative: Very loose. Jeans, sneakers, hoodies are normal. Even leaders dress casually. The “rule” is: look clean, intentional, and upgrade your look for investors/clients.

In most places, client-facing = one notch more formal than your daily norm.

I have to dress "business formal" while doing clinic work and dress in scrubs when doing hospital or ER exams.
