Healthcare for sure. Does mental health count? I worked at a mental health hospital and they gossip so much it's not even funny. They were mad at me because I never spilled the beans about my life. And for good reason, it would have been the talk of the town if I had.

I worked in healthcare marketing. It’s female dominated and I hated “the culture”.

When the gender ratio is even it’s okay. I’ve worked with plenty of hard working women I fully respected.

But when it’s 2/3rds women or more that’s when all the gossip bs happens. It’s not “harmless” either.

Definitely. I have been surprised to find out that guys gossip the worst in IT. It's disgusting. But then, it's largely male dominated anyway.

There is a difference between gossiping and ventilating. You ventilate when you have a direct problem with someone and are looking support / advice on how to handle it.

Gossiping is when you bad mouth people who never did anything to directly harm you. You might not like them for whatever reason. But if they never did anything to harm you then you are doing this for the “condescendion high”. It’s gross.

The problem is gossiping created this seductive glue between people. It’s a really unhealthy to bond (women are generally more prone to it). I’ll never trust someone who consistently gossips. I’ll usually quickly distance myself from them.

Anytime you generate a subculture which includes large masses of male and female workers. Gossip is inevitable. It is part of the human condition.
