How do you handle coworkers who disrespectfully call you by surname?

There this "personality"
He likes to swagger and call people by surname
Then he talks about people when they're not there referring to them by surname
Not saying anything bad

But then later I meet those guys and they call me by surname

I stop them and ask them why they calling me that
They say maybe: oh that's that xyz calls you

Anyway, I had to stamp it out

I’ve coached a few people through this. The key is calm, consistent boundaries.

With him, something like:
“Use my first name, please. I don’t like being called by my surname.”
If he repeats it:
“I’ve already said I don’t like that. Please stop.”

With coworkers:
“Just call me John; I prefer that. Thanks.”

Don’t over-explain, don’t joke it away. If it continues, document instances and, if needed, raise it with your manager or HR as a respect issue, not a personality clash.

In some countries it's socially acceptable to call people by their names. Psychologically calling someone by their name is seen as positive and it's an iron part of every psychological manipulation book.
