I think they are butchering classics. With these "political correctbess" crap. I'm sure there are enough books and writers that could actually cook up a good original mermaid story that could have a black female lead and nobody would bat an eye. But doing a little remake and blackwashing it already gives the "hey something is wrong" - feeling and i don't see how that is supposed to help anyone.

Bet soon they will make a Hercules remake with a black female version of Hercules "himself".

I really don't care. There is nothing that says Ariel has to look a certain way, except that she is half fish. Who says the live action remakes have to look like the originals? It worked well for Beauty and the Beast but they don't all have to be like that. I hear Mulan is going to be significantly different.

If she was cast because they feel that out of the auditions, she was undeniably the best, that’s fine, but I think that if she was chosen because she is black, well that’s just pandering, and I hate pandering.

I despise forced sociopolitical commentary. If it fits the story, go for it, but don’t just force it. When that happens, it makes the movie insincere and distracted, but most importantly, it undermines the culture and struggles of the represented group.

I'm sorry but why does it matter if it's a black actress or white? It's like saying Spider-Man can't be black or the same thing when Sam Jackson was cast as Nick Fury. Personally I think it is good to change things up, and if the actor or actress is good what does it matter the skin colour? We should really be past the whole race and skin colour by now we are all human and it shouldn't matter. I apologise I didn't mean to rant.

It is not about whether it makes sense or not it is about taking a character people know and changing it. Nobody would care if they just made some mermaid movie and made it a black girl nobody would complain but why go after all the characters that people love?

The whole point of a remake is to modernize the original in the way it is presented but to make the story just as accurate as the original. The story probably won’t change but unless they couldn’t get any white actresses to play Ariel, there is no point to making her black.

You might say it is to help black people relate to her but it’s such a dumb argument. I never had any problem relating to Will Smith’s characters in Independence Day or MIB for example even though he’s black, or Samus Aran even though she is a woman. I related to them because they are all compelling characters with strengths and weaknesses as well as being badass alien hunters and that’s all I really need. I would be just as much against making sequels where Will Smith’s characters are white guys or making Samus a man. It just wouldn’t have the original feel to it which is something you want for a remake or a sequel.

It is deliberately being done to replace white people in the media and make them less and less represented in their own civilizations media. This is awful and shows clearly the Jewish nature of film and the hostile way that Jews feel towards white people.

Yet whites have been cast as Africans from biblical times and other roles and races where the characters race is vital to the story.

It's going both ways. Yes, white people have played PoC before, but there's plenty of examples going the other way too.

In the Hamilton musical both white and Mediterranean characters were played by black people. Both Hamilton and Burr were both dark looking, but they weren't black. They had European facial features and their hair were most likely straight or slightly wavy, not an afro.

In a TV-series and a movie there were two dark women, one of them looked Latina/Hispanic by the way, who played the white redhead queen Mary of Scots. They never tried to attempt making their hair red or give them a red wig or the correct clothing. They did however put a lot of bright lightning so their brown skin would appear a few shades lighter. One of them still looked Latina, while the other one could pass as French, not Scottish.

@curiousnorway were not gonna go back and forth. This is like when Amanda stenberg played rue in hunger games and white people complained about a little girl. After they assumed the character was supposed to be white. If black people ever played "White roles" the race of the character was insignificant.

No one ever complains about those fucking hispanics playing white people either. No one has an issue until it's a person with brown skin.

Black people are genetically diverse, not all blacks have afros believe it or not. A lot have lighter skin, eye color, curly hair, etc. Whites and others are not the only people with those features

I know not all blacks looks the same, but when the movies first gets criticized for casting black people for white roles it's because of they won't pass as white. If the black woman Halsey played a white one, no one would complain because of she would easily pass just bleaching her hair and put on some makeup. Shakira could easily pass as white and Hispanic/Latina depending on her makeup and hair dye. So when people says they wants the right "race" to play, they mean the person that's cast should resemble the character. What they really are in real life is irrelevant and what they pass as is seen as important for accuracy. Eva Green is a white woman, but she has put some effort in to it to pass as a French one.

I think it would be much easier if people just played characters they looked like instead of trying to look like something else or not looking like the character at all. I can understand if a human plays an alien needs an alien suit - but I think a blonde playing a blonde instead of casting a brownie etc. would save a lot of time and effort. People who has the right looks would also more easily get jobs.

I wants historical people to be accurate. It's however not as big deal with fictional ones though.
